EWIC 2020

Virtual Conference  •  October 15–16

East–West Iron Club (EWIC) is an annual meeting for researchers interested in iron biology and translational research. EWIC 2020 goes virtual and will feature a keynote address, roundtable discussion, and a series of short presentations by trainees. EWIC 2020 will be chaired by Yelena Ginzburg (Icahn School of Medicine at Mt Sinai). Pictured at New York Blood Center, October 25, 2019 are the East–West Iron Club 2019 trainee awardees (left-to-right) Joseph Olivera (University of Florida), T Alex Ruwe (University of Cincinnati), Nick Bessman (Weill Cornell Medicine), Melanie Castro (Icahn School of Medicine at Mt Sinai), and Erdem Terzi (New York University).

EWIC 2020 Program

The EWIC 2020 Program (PDF) begins Thursday afternoon, October 15 with the keynote address, followed by a lively virtual roundtable discussion session. The program continues Friday, October 16 with a series of trainee data presentations, business meeting, and award.

Keynote Address

Our EWIC 2020 keynote speaker is Elizabeta Nemeth, PhD of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA. Dr Nemeth will present "Iron in Pregnancy: Physiology and Disease".

Elizabeta Nemeth was born and raised in Novi Sad in former Yugoslavia, currently the second largest city in Serbia. As an undergraduate, she majored in Molecular Biology and Physiology at University of Belgrade, and subsequently attended University of Hawaii where she earned her PhD in Cell, Molecular and Neurosciences. She joined the laboratory of Tomas Ganz at UCLA in 2002 for a postdoctoral fellowship. While training, she began working on the recently discovered peptide hepcidin and its function in iron metabolism. Since then, her work helped define the regulation of hepcidin production by iron, inflammation and erythropoiesis, described the role of hepcidin in different iron disorders including hereditary hemochromatosis, β-thalassemia and anemia of inflammation, elucidated the mechanism of action of hepcidin as the ligand of ferroportin, described a novel hepcidin-regulating hormone erythroferrone, and developed novel hepcidin-targeted candidates for the treatment of iron disorders. She co-founded three biotechnology companies focused on hepcidin-targeted diagnostics and therapeutics.

In her EWIC2020 keynote address, Dr Nemeth will review recent progress on iron metabolism in the fetal–placental–maternal axis. Dr Nemeth is a Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Director of the UCLA Center for Iron Disorders. She was a standing member of the Molecular and Cellular Hematology NIH study section. Dr Nemeth is President–Elect of the International BioIron Society, a past EWIC chair, an associate editor of the American Journal of Hematology, and a director of the UCLA K program for young faculty.

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission is now closed. The selection committee has reviewed the abstracts submitted by trainees and has selected abstracts for brief virtual presentations on October 16, see EWIC 2020 Program (PDF).

Meeting participation is free as always. Registration is required to obtain the Zoom link and password. Please Register via LastLink.
